About the Blog
Welcome! This blog (and archive) is dedicated to taking a retrospective look at the life, career, and legacy of American entertainer Władziu Valentino Liberace.
Liberace was a kitsch, camp, and gay icon who not only revolutionized pop culture with his glittering costumes and legendary showmanship, but who also did more than any modern American to popularize piano music with the working class. Unabashedly flamboyant in ways it was unthinkable for a successful male performer to be, Liberace inspired generations of artists from Little Richard to Elton John while living a life in both public and private that continues to make him the subject of dismissal and oversimplification.
With this blog, I hope to go beyond both the idol and the caricature to provide a fuller picture of Liberace as a complex but important historical figure who pushed the limits of what it meant to be gay and visible at a time when his very existence was considered a crime.
